KANIMAMBO
(Thank you from the bottom of my heart - shangan language)
Mozambique is brimming with undiscovered gems despite being one of the world's poorest nations. Photographers can find striking compositions among Mozambique's numerous uncharted village roads. Kanimambo describes how two volunteers discovered the nation's undiscovered gems during their six-month tenure. Due to a volunteer programme for which they spent nine months in England training, Paola Gomez and Solveig Niitra were in Mozambique. The first five months of the girls' employment were spent in a Macuse teacher preparation programme. After organising an art workshop where the aspiring teachers had their faces painted, the concept for a picture show was born. Even though you do not see many actual tribal chiefs anymore, everyone in Mozambique knows what one looks like. The college students frequently used face paint to enhance their performances during the weekly cultural events. Solveig got her ideas for the face paint seen in Paola's photographs during such performances. The girls observed numerous instances of people trying to resemble them while oblivious to their beauty during their stay. The face paint was intended to inspire people to embrace their culture. Because Mozambique is not a popular tourist destination, Paola has also managed to capture small snippets of the native fauna. Like other nations in Africa, Mozambicans speak several regional tongues. Words from the Shangan (Maputo), Ndau (Beira), and Echuabo (Zambezia) languages are used in Kanimambo. The overall goal of the exhibition is to introduce Mozambique's population to a small portion of Africa.
The show was intended to stay in the Livonian Museum's main building until the end of the summer of 2020 when the pandemic struck, and it only remained there until lockdown.
FRIDAY, 7 FEBRUARY 2020 FROM 15:00-17:00 UTC Opening of the KANIMAMBO  photo exhibition and African conversation evening.
